Understanding Oracle vault backups

To back up an Oracle vault database, use the Prepare for Backup Wizard the same as for a Hypertrieve vault database, as explained in Preparing for backups. You can then back up the files in the Backup folder with standard backup software.

Warning    Do not create vault database backups with the Oracle tools without first running the Prepare for Backup Wizard in Meridian Enterprise Administrator, either interactively or as a scheduled task. The Prepare for Backup Wizard must be used in order to first commit the transaction logs that the EDM Server service generates. These are required for a complete backup.

To restore a backup of an Oracle vault database, restore the backed up files from the backup media to the Backup folder, restore the Oracle database, and then use the Restart After Restore Wizard as described in Restoring backups.

We recommend the following procedure for backing up Oracle vaults:

  1. Run the Prepare for Backup Wizard either interactively or as a scheduled task.
  2. Disable and stop the EDM Server service (and the dependent BlueCielo File System service) with one of the following methods:
sc \\. config EDM_SERVICE start=cleared
net stop AMFSSVC
net stop EDM_SERVICE
  1. Back up the Oracle database with the Oracle tools.
  2. Back up the Oracle backup files, the content of the vault’s Backup folder, and the vault stream files to backup media with standard backup software.
  3. Restart the EDM Server services that were stopped in step 2 using one of the methods listed in step 2.

All changes Meridian makes in the Oracle database are transactional. If archiving is enabled for the Oracle database, a backup can be made on the fly, as long as all parts of the system—database and streams—are backed up at approximately the same time.

There are many ways to create database backups using Oracle, and it is normally the responsibility of an Oracle database administrator to configure the backups to best meet the organization’s requirements.
